Beth was born in Lima OH after the Glee Club's Regional performance sent her biological mother Quinn into labor, and she was adopted by Shelby Corcoran who was Rachel Berry's biological mother. Beth's biological mother and her waste of space biological father had an open adoption arrangement with Shelby which included written correspondence and occasional visits. Her biological father lost these rights when it had become clear that her conception had been the result of an unwanted sexual encounter. Beth was very young when this occurred and does not remember interacting with Noah Puckerman.

When Beth was five, someone new started to come to visitations with her and Quinn, Quinn's new boyfriend Finn Hudson. Finn was in the Marines and wasn't often around but when he was he went out of his way to make Beth feel wanted, and facilitated contact between her and her biological aunt Leah. Beth didn't understand how they knew each other, but she didn't really care. When Beth's mother said that Quinn could see her on a more regular basis if she lived closer, Quinn at first moved to New Haven to attend Yale and then to New York City. To Rachel, Shelby's obnoxious biological daughter's horror, Finn followed along. It was clear to Beth -- though being so young she didn't understand why -- that Rachel viewed both Finn's relationship with Quinn and his relationship with Beth as affronts to her very being. So Rachel took it upon herself to tell Beth that Finn had once thought he was her father...in needless, excessively graphic detail.

Rachel wasn't allowed to see Beth anymore after that.

Finn denied Rachel's claims rather strenuously but he was not an inspiring liar and even elementary school aged Beth could see through his attempts at evasion, though she graciously pretended she hadn't when she saw how upset the entire conversation had made him. Finn might not have been willing to admit that Rachel was telling the truth to her face, but a package of things that had been addressed to 'Drizzle' and carefully stored away showed up at her house, postmarked from Finn's mother's address in Lima.

When Finn and Quinn got married, Beth was allowed to go to the wedding. Her mother was invited too, which made things less awkward. Beth was surprised to be referred to as their biological daughter, which might have been true on Quinn's part but everyone knew wasn't on Finn's, but she didn't voice a single protest. It wasn't something that she wanted to discuss, just like they didn't discuss the letters Finn had written to her or the things that he'd purchased her that had been shoved into the cardboard box. Beth sometimes felt like Finn couldn't look at her without wanting to cry, so if pretending she had ever been his made him not want to look at her and want to cry at his wedding, whatever.

And so when he and Quinn continued to maintain the facade when they had children of their own -- children who they kept, who got to call them Mom and Dad, who got to look like their 'shared' father -- Beth went along. Suddenly Finn was Papa Finn to match Mama Quinn instead of the Uncle Finn that he'd been since Beth could barely remember. It was easier than bringing up things that she wasn't supposed to know about, secrets that hadn't been Rachel's to tell.

Then Beth got sent to a horrible place -- Storybrooke, ME -- where there were multiple versions of her parents and nobody she knew. Beth was uneasy living in a place where her biological father Noah was, especially since there were versions of him who were still with her mother and some of them even had versions of her. So when Finn's father -- suddenly not dead, but whatever -- invited her and Shelby to join them at the Glee compound, she had Shelby accept. Mr. Hudson said that Puck wasn't allowed there, and that was all the knowledge that Beth needed. Still, Beth did her best to keep her distance. This was difficult to do when she acquainted herself with Fi and Cori.

Fi and Cori were insistent that it didn't matter who she was or what her 'backstory' was: she was their sister and they didn't want her to hide. Naturally reserved, Beth allowed them to integrate her into the larger constellation of their family even though, again, they were actually Finn's. Her Finn back home had never made her feel unwanted, per se, but it was staggeringly obvious that he would have preferred the truth of her biological parentage to have never been known.

When a new version of Finn and Quinn showed up and Finn voiced a desire to get to know her, Beth made the error in judgement of letting her guard down: she agreed to get to know the new Finn and Quinn, who were only a couple of years older than they'd been when her mother had given her up. Finn was fine -- he wanted to be her dad -- but Quinn soon turned on Beth, making it clear that it was only Finn who wanted her around and that Quinn would have been just as soon rid of her, which matched what Rachel had told her back home all those years ago. Things only worsened when -- despite being seniors in high school -- Quinn got pregnant again. Beth knew that accidents happened, of which, even in the worlds where she was actually Finn's, she was proof, but it certainly hurt her when Finn was saying she'd be the baby's sister and Quinn was saying the baby would never know her name.

This was when Beth found herself -- along with Fi, Cori, and Evie -- transported to a magical island. The evil Quinn wasn't there and the four of them got a swanky suite in some hotel called the Four Seasons. Once they had gotten settled -- and Beth had steadfastly ignored the influx of Finns from Storybrooke with children who loved them --  Beth bravely responded to a post made by FP Jones. This version of FP Jones had adopted a version of her biological mother, and seemed a safe enough adult to reach out to as a potential rejection of her wouldn't wound what was left of her sanity. Fi and Cori needed to be supervised by an adult.

FP and his wife Alice were willing to take her in and said that Beth could use the Jones name (Cori and Fi went with Grandpa Chris and Carole the second they showed up) to which Beth agreed.
